Located in Northeast Portland, this 780-square-foot new construction ADU was designed as a peaceful and light-filled retirement residence for Christopher Adams and his wife. As an accomplished architect, city planner, and urban designer, Christopher brought a lifetime of experience to the project—redrawing every change by hand and thoughtfully planning each detail. His goal was to age in place near his daughter, son-in-law, and grandchild, creating a close-knit multigenerational living environment.

Uniquely sited at the front of the lot, the ADU allows for a private, shared garden between the two homes. The layout includes two rooms and one bathroom, with vaulted ceilings that stagger and flow from room to room, allowing attic space for utilities and solar battery backup. Full solar integration, skylights with flush shafts and built-in lighting, and stepless transitions between decks and doors make the home efficient, bright, and highly livable. Every inch was considered—from the placement of treasured furniture and art to the integration of native plants in a rain garden designed for both function and beauty.

In addition to the ADU, we upgraded elements of the original home: new siding, garage and basement improvements, structural porch updates, and a boardwalk connecting the homes. The pre-construction process required digitizing Christopher’s hand-drawn plans, and collaborating closely—even remotely—with a client who brought creative problem-solving and architectural mastery to every phase.

Heartbreakingly, Christopher passed away shortly before the project’s completion. It was a profound loss for his family and our team. We are deeply honored to have helped bring his final vision to life—a warm, beautifully crafted space that reflects his talent, his kindness, and his love for his family.
