  • Tucked away at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac in Portland’s Southwest Hills, this 1938 brick Tudor—originally designed by J.D. Annand—has been thoughtfully reimagined for a new generation. The young homeowners, recently relocated from the East Coast and expecting their first child, approached JHL Design and ClarkBuilt with a vision: update their historic home while honoring its timeless character.

The remodel focused on creating better spaces for both entertaining and daily living. Seeking a stronger connection between the kitchen and outdoor dining, ClarkBuilt reconfigured a main-floor office and added a 38-square-foot exterior addition—introducing a larger mudroom, pantry, and covered outdoor kitchen alongside a new paver patio. Inside, the kitchen was completely rebuilt, blending traditional millwork details with a refined, modern sensibility.

Entertaining spaces were also reimagined. A formerly irregular octagonal library was trued to a perfect octagon and transformed into a floor-to-ceiling sapele bar with a pass-through to the dining room, while the living-room fireplace wall was rebuilt with custom sapele built-ins designed to frame the clients’ art collection. The new mantel—crafted in limestone-based cast stone—anchors the space with quiet elegance. Throughout the home, ClarkBuilt’s cabinetry—crafted in both paint-grade finishes and rich sapele—brings warmth and precision to every detail, extending from the kitchen and bar to the office and mudroom. In the primary suite, new lighting, custom paint-grade casework for his wardrobe, and a refreshed walk-in closet for hers carry the project’s material language into the private rooms with the same care and clarity. New millwork and careful restoration of the home’s original windows further preserve its historic character.

Working within the home’s 1930s structure required close collaboration between builder and designer—a balance of design ambition and architectural integrity. The result is a seamless blend of old and new: craftsmanship that celebrates the home’s history while embracing the comfort and functionality of modern living. ClarkBuilt takes particular pride in the project’s communication, coordination, and timing—completing construction just in time to welcome the family’s newest addition home.
